ions are rare in the contemporary Supreme Court, frequently referred to as the Rehnquist Court. The ideological divisions among the justices of the Court, more so than political divisions, appear to underlie the absence of consensus in most decisions reached by the Court. Because neither extreme of the ideological spectrum that characterize the justices is sufficiently strong the exert undiluted power in the Court's decision-making process, however, the more flexible ideological center is able to exercise a pivotal role in the functioning of the Rehnquist Court.
