Parent Involvement and School Improvement: A Proposal

effects of a parenting skills workshop on general, social, and parenting self-efficacy and to determine the relationship between parent self-efficacy and parent-child education-related interactions.

Social cognitive theory provides a theoretical framework for the study of self-efficacy. Bandura explained social cognitive theory is a theory of social learning and imitation. Bandura also stated that perceived self-efficacy includes judgments of how well a person is able to execute a course of action that is needed to deal with a given situation. Personal levels of empowerment are defined as an individual's level of personal power and self-efficacy. Self-efficacy beliefs are the foundation for motivation, well-being, and personal accomplishment; self-efficacy is a determinant of behavior. A parent's self-efficacy affects how the parent interacts with their child (Scheel & Rieckmann, 1998; Pajares, 2000).

The research questions are as follows: 1. How does parent skills training affect general, social, and parenting self-efficacy? 2. How does parent skills training affect parent-child interactions related to education?

The hypothesis is as follows: There is a positive correlation between high levels of self-efficacy and high levels of parent-child interactions related to education.

Parent skills training is operationally defined by participation in a workshop at a local community clinic. The workshop is designed to teach parents how to effectively interact with their child.

Parent self-efficacy is defined by the items on the SES and Parent Efficacy Scale-R.
