The following case study interview will present findings from an interview with an adolescent. A description of the individual interviewed will include physical characteristics, emotional strengths and weaknesses, coping skills, interpersonal style, intellectual ability, and level of maturity. In addition, the individual's development, and current life situations and challenges will be discussed, followed by overall impressions of the individual. The individual interviewed was a While adolescent male, age 17 years, named Kevin (fictitious name for confidentiality). Kevin is five feet, eleven inches tall, of medium build, and average weight. He has short brown hair, was dressed in a clean-cut style, and wore glasses. He arrived promptly for the interview and was cooperative throughout the interview session, appearing willing to participate and possibly discover new personal insights. Kevin interacted with enthusiasm. For example, when a question was asked such as "How would you describe yourself," Kevin would sit up straight, almost on the edge of his seat, and reply with fairly loud vocal expression that was accompanied with hand gestures. His appearance was consistent with his description of himself. Kevin described himself as being conscientious, hard-working, responsible, and a good student. He stated that he was not aware of any personal weaknesses, however, he did wish he was able to do m

e a little more withdrawn and edgy. For example, he would avoid direct answers and simply state that he was "very busy" and didn't miss this type of activity. He began to cross and swing his leg back and forth, readjust his glasses, and squirm in his seat, if questioned further. He seemed unwilling to admit or discuss any lack in emotional or social areas of his development.
Context of the Individual
Kevin is finishing up high school at this time and preparing to enter college. He has maintained good grades, and will have no difficulty being accepted at the local four-year college. He is strongly focused in this area. However, he is less interested in social relationships and does not report having many friends.
Kevin is at an age which includes the struggle between identity and confusion. At this point in life, the adolescent typically faces changes in hormones, shifts from parental to peer approval, and the need to determine self definition. They struggle between the need for self-acceptance and other-acceptance, and attempt to achieve self-identity rather than group-identity.
