Focus. When a family enters a therapeutic situation, they tend to present with a flood of data. While changes need to be made which include the understanding of boundaries, strengths, problems, and complementary functions, the therapist must begin with an initial focus, goal, and strategy.

Intensity. A certain degree of intensity is needed to change a family. The simple telling of a family regarding how to change is rarely enough. The family must experience an intensity that comes about with therapist involvement. This intensity can be achieved through a variety of techniques, such as repetition of a message, or repetition of equivalent transactions. Families have their own rhythm and interruption of this theme also leads to intensity. The therapist can change the distance between each family member or resist the family pull to create intensity.
