Chapter 1, "Mastering The Context" begins with a quote that sets the stage for the reader. This quote reflects that leaders are important in creating a state of mind that is society, serving as symbols, expressing values, conceiving and articulating goals, carrying people above conflicts, and uniting them in pursuit of goals. This quote sets the stage for the inspiration that flows from the rest of the chapter and book.

Next the chapter presents a view of the context. The stage is filled with leaders that have fallen. The dangers in the world are listed as nuclear war, disease, and lack of quality leaders. American lacks leaders and time has shown that this system does not work. Bennis points out that good leaders are important because they make for effective organizations, they are anchors in a turbulent time, and they maintain integrity in organizations.
