Creating Leadership Ranks

"Creating Leadership Ranks High on the List" by Doehrman (2003). This article presents a discussion regarding the role of leadership being the process of influencing people toward an intended goal, and a program designed to assist students in becoming leaders.

The author pointed out that millions are being invested by corporations, to develop leaders. The program described includes 500 students, grades six through twelve, who attend workshops and a five-week summer program. Workshop topics include: communication, cultural diversity, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and leadership development. Students are taught transformation leadership which includes the components of intelligence, inspiration, individualized consideration and appreciation for others, and charisma.

This article provides only a brief overview of the topic and program, lacking details needed to fully understand either. While the topic is introduced with examples of corporations that attempt to train and develop employees, and a rationale for the use of training workshops is briefly provided, the reader remains ill-informed regarding the process of developing a leader. For example, how myself or students are taught to become transformation leaders is not clear, other than being presenting with information.

"Communication From the Inside Out" by Pearce (2001). This article presents the topic of leadership which is viewed as requiring an inside knowledge and ability to authentically communicate in such a manner that it is inspiring. Real leadership is described as being very personal since it includes this inspirational communication. It is pointed out that in an age where loyalty is declining, employee motivation can only be inspired with a leader who is able to give meaning to the values proclaimed.
