While the article was presented in a clear manner, and the discussion did compare findings to previous research, implications and applications of findings was lacking.

"Receptive and Expressive Communication Development of Young Males With Fragile X Syndrome," by Roberts, Mirrett, and Burchinal (2001). The authors stated that Fragile X syndrome is a common inherited cause of mental retardation for males and research has pointed out that a broad spectrum of communication problems exist for this group. It has also been shown that cognitive deficits tend to become greater in later childhood/adolescence. Thus it has been suggested that greater delays may be found in young males as they get older, however it is not known whether there are greater expressive or receptive communication deficits in young children and the age at which these deficits appear. This information is needed for adequate timing and focus of interventions, implying the need for the current study.
