This is an excerpt from the paper...
Higher education in the United States is becoming ever more attractive for students living in other countries. Cultural differences between many other societies and the United States, however, can create serious problems for the unprepared student from outside the United States. These cultural problems may be especially serious for students living in the Middle Eastern countries who come to the United States to attend colleges and universities.Information is presented in this report in relation to two major areas of interest for the foreign student considering the pursuit off an academic career in higher education in the United States. First, some of the cultural problems that might confront students from countries located in the Middle East likely will confront when the come the United States to study are identified and described. Second, the ways in which the University of California at Santa Barbara may help such students adjust the different mores of American culture so that the learning experience in the United States may be optimized are discussed. In addition to these two areas of discussion, this report provides additional information for the prospective foreign student at the University of California at Santa Barbara. First, an aerial view of the campus of the university is presented for the prospective students, and second, the academic calendar for the university for the 1998-1998 academic year is presented.
