Rather, it was the combined effect of all of the issues that had been developing since the time of the First World War.

American Objectives in the Middle East Region, and Possible American Policies to Neutralize Iraq

Two factors combine to cause the Middle East to be important to the United States. These same factors dictate current American interests and objectives in the area. These three factors are (1) energy supplies and (2) support for the state of Israel.
