Generally, many successful therapists combine elements of cognitive and behavioral therapies into an integrated treatment plan that may provide solution-focused interventions as well. Levis (1999) states that traditional Watsonian behaviorism has given way in the therapeutic milieu to the influence of cognitive theory and cognitive therapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy or CBT is now employed by a large number of therapists who have found behavioral interventions and particularly negative reinforcement or aversive stimulus-response conditioning to be ineffective with many client groups (Levis, 1999).

A number of specific behaviors and cognitions or beliefs must be targeted in the therapeutic intervention.
