The children's literature of A.A. Milne is not only as distinguished as any other piece of serious literature, but it also teaches good, creative use of the English Language. Contrary to popular belief, A.A. Milne wrote more than children's poems and stories based on his son and his son's toys. He also wrote for the magazine Punch, and was a well-known playwright in his time. After the birth of his son in 1920, however, he became more interested in the nursery world and wrote "Vespers" while procrastinating on writing a play. Later, in an attempt to get away from a crowded house while visiting some friends, he started work on the other poetry and stories that would soon become the body of work known as The World of Christopher Robin (poetry), and The World of Pooh (stories) (Milne 1 234). He was a professional, knowledgeable writer who would make a greater impact on the world of literature - through his children's literature - than he would ever know. This impact is worth studying.

Besides his writing pedigree, however, the use of language (as in vocabulary and cadence) in his poems and stories is also an important tool to be used in the English Literature classroom. While this is a multicultural, globalized world, most business and public affairs are conducted in English.
