But blocking the accreditation of gay organizations and prohibiting gays and lesbians from access to funding is not the worst of the recent injustices suffered by gays and lesbians. Gay and lesbian leaders are complaining that the American judicial system simply has not adequately responded to the wake of the gay-bashing violence. For example, many prosecutions for gay bashing result in acquittals or light sentences since many criminal justice professionals and jurors are homophobic and believe that the gays provoked violence through sexual overtures (Minkowitz, 1992, p. 368).
