Roland, one of Charlemagne's favorite knights; Ganelon has told Marsila that Charlemagne intends to take over Sarraguce, taking half of the kingdom for himself and giving the other half to Roland.

Thus does the plot, built around a lie, unfold. Ganelon returns to Charlemagne with Marsila's false promise to convert to Christianity, in anticipation of receiving riches
