The biggest change in curriculum materials in law enforcement and emergency services has come in the area of personal instruction. In the past, virtually all instruction was done in person, in a lecture setting, from the most basic to the most complex. Classroom time might include films, filmstrips, and videos, but the lecture format dominated. In recent years, instruction has become more "virtual," with many basic aspects of instruction being delivered via personal computer CDs. These are much more time- and personnel-efficient than (sometimes boring) classroom instruction. They enable individuals to learn elementary material at their own pace. If I were to wish for any single addition to the curriculum, it would be more in-depth instruction in efficient use of Internet resources. To be sure, law enforcement has access to multiple secure databases. However, any investigation develops a life of its own, and the ability to use consumer-level online resources effectively and knowledgeably rather than taking an on-the-job approach to figuring out online information literacy would be especially valuable.
