Educational Policy of China

omy will require faster educational reform and progress. The educational endeavors focus on improving the quality of workers. To this end, the major reforms are centered on vocational education and on ways to allow students to transition between school and employment easily.

The United States' educational reform began with President Bush although President Clinton has taken the major credit for the Goals 2000 project. The goals for education for the United States are:

1) All children will start school ready to learn.

2) The graduation rate from high school will be at least 90 percent.

3) Students will be able to demonstrate competence in critical subjects.

4) U.S. students will be the first in the world in math and science achievement.

5) Every adult will be literate and have skills to compete in the economy.

6) All schools will be free of drugs (Chu notes).

The goals for the United States have a greater focus on environmental factors than China's educational goals. Both sets of goals mention the economy.
