The "gleams of a remoter world / Visit the soul" and this does not cause the speaker to look at what is around him but to "look on high". Rather than the clarity of vision offered by Wordsworth's rural scene, the extract's speaker asks if "some unknown omnipotence" has cast the "veil of life and death" over everything. He cannot see clearly and fears he may be in a dream. Things are hidden from the speaker and the "spirit fails" and is driven "from steep to steep". Thus by the time a specific place is mentioned it is clearly part of the metaphoric
