the right not to speak, in England not speaking is held against them in court. Both societies want the same kind of general protections for the citizenry--freedom, yet freedom from assault as well--but they may use different means for achieving this end.

In Men Should Weep, the vulnerability of the women in society is highlighted, and it is made all the more powerful as a theme in that one of the women shown to be vulnerable in this show is a policewoman who cannot keep herself from being raped any more than can other women. A theme that emerges from this film is that every citizen is part of the process of providing security--they act as witnesses, they call the police, they provide assistance, and if they do not, society will crumble.
