As a result, the South was turning into an armed camp where white people lived in constant fear of the uprising of the slaves, such as had occurred in the Nat Turner rebellion. This fear itself generated violence and bloodshed.

The antislavery forces promoted colonization as a way of relieving the country of its "Negro problem," but abolitionists opposed this, suspicious because it was supported by slaveholders. They believed, as did a majority of blacks, that colonization was a way of draining off the free black population as a way of making slavery even more secure.

In 1831 the New England Anti-Slavery Society was formed under the leadership of Garrison, and as the organization grew, it also became more radical and more vociferous. Garrison was calling for immediate emancipation, and he dominated the organization.
