One simply cannot change a religion or a science radically overnight and expect the followers or practitioners to go along willingly and knowledgeably. Change occurs in religion and science, even in methodology, but that change takes place gradually, and the autonomy of the individual in those fields is minimized. For example, "In the objective content of science, these individual features are forgotten and effaced for one of the principal aims of scientific thought is the elimination of all personal and anthropomorphic elements" (Cassirer 228).
