by Crabtree because Crabtree did not approve of Puttbutt's master's thesis, in which Puttbutt wrote that Shakespeare's Othello was racist (94). So Puttbut plans his revenge against Crabtree. Since Puttbutt is now in charge of restructuring the departments, he informs Crabtree that Crabtree will no longer be allowed to teach a course on Middle English but instead will have to teach freshman composition (99). Crabtree retorts that this would be ridiculous for a man of his rank and then leaves in a huff. Later, when Puttbutt finds Crabtree sitting in his outer office, Crabtree announces that he is now willing to teach the composition course. But Puttbutt has had a change of heart: now Puttbutt wants Crabtree to teach a West African language, Yoruba. And then Puttbutt confronts Crabtree by picking up a copy of a local magazine with an article that Crabtree wrote which denounces multiculturalism and Afrocentricity and points out how Crabtree knows nothing about the Yoruba language (III 13). Crabtree, now angry, leaves with a package of materials about the Yoruba language that Puttbutt has prepared for him.
