The people who lived in the surrounding Palestinian lands worshipped a pantheon of deities, observed human sacrifices, and created idols. Through Moses and the prophets, God established a religious system which despised idolatry and human sacrifice, and which placed great emphasis on individual and corporate worship.

Judaism looks to a future time when the kingdom of God will be established on earth by the Messiah. The forces of evil will be cast out, and a new order will reign forever. "Judaism remains a strong monotheistic religion based on a prophetic and ethical tradition."
