Evaluation of the MMPI

K Measures individual's unwillingness to disclose personal information. High scores reflect defensiveness or an unrealistic view of self.

Hs Measures neurotic tendency to develop or claim somatic problems. High scorers have vague physical complaints, are unhappy, complaining, demanding, hostile and attention-seeking.

D Low mood, self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy are reflected in high scores; also, moodiness, shyness, pessimism, guilt and depression.

Hy Measures repression and denial used to manage conflict. High scorers tend to develop physical symptoms under stress; can be naive, gullible, outgoing, visible, demanding, manipulative and non-insightful.

Pd Measures anti-social behavior including impulsivity, poor social judgement, disregard for rule sand authority, hostility and aggressiveness; can be extraverted, likable, exhibitionistic, controlling and manipulative in social situations. High scorers are also immature and have difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

Mf Measures sex-role attitude and behavior. High scoring males are passive, sensitive, effeminate and have broad interests as well as conflict over heterosexual behavior. High scoring females have narrow interests and are viewed as masculine, aggressive, adventurous.

Pa Measures suspiciousness, aloofness, shrewdness and guardedness typical of paranoia. High scorers are hostile, argumentative, angry, resentful and tend to externalize blame.

Pt Measures anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior and general maladjustment. High scorers are tense, worried, preoccupied and phobic.

MMPI SCALES Description

Sc High scorers are unconventional, schizoid and alienated. They are withdrawn, moody, feel confused and have unusual ideas; can also be mood disturbance.
