As Volti notes, technology is usually seen as "applied science," implying that technology is a consequence of scientific discovery. He cites certain instances where this is indeed the case:

Modern medical practices have been strongly influenced by fundamental discoveries in biology. The development of the transistor depended on a thorough understanding of quantum mechanics. Synthetic materials have been made possible by research into polymer chemistry (Volti 55).

However, there are other examples where technological advances take place without the benefit of scientific knowledge, such as the ancient Greek developments in agriculture, building construction, mining, and the refining of metals which took place without drawing in any significant degree on Greek science.
