long life, Doane (1979) reports that individuals most likely to have a long life tend to have certain strong indicators in their natal charts. These indicators are: (1) a sun-mars aspect; (2) either a sextile or a trine of the sun to the planet Jupiter; (3) the placement of the sun in an angular house in the birth chart; (4) a mon-mars aspect; (5) either a sextile or trine of the moon to the planet Jupiter; and (6) the placement of the moon in an angular house in the natal chart. In addition to the indicators for suicide, all of the just listed indicators of long life were examined in this study.
This study's research purpose can be re-characterized as an attempt to answer the following research questions:
1. Do astrological indicators for suicide occur more frequently in the natal charts of people who died of suicide than in the natal charts of people who died by means other than suicide?
2. Do astrological indicators of long life occur less frequently in the natal charts of people who died of suicide than in the natural charts of people who died by means other than suicide?
Data used in the study were drawn from Press' (1978) sample pool compiled for The New York Suicide study. From this pool of 2,250 certified records, 200 records (not used in Timins' previous research) were drawn, one hundred of which were deaths by suicide and 100 of which were deaths by non-suicidal means (control group).
Birth times for all selected records were obtained from the Medical Examiner's Office of New York city. The computation of astrological indications of both suicide and long life utilized the Power of Energy Procedures developed by Timins based on computational considerations expressed by Doane (1979), Hand (1981), and Press (1978).
