The aim of this research is to clarify the extent and character of the relationship between the nature and function of women in American education and the nature, process, and function of the phenomenon of American social history designated as the women's movement. Doubtless women teachers in the multivaried American educational system were aware of the dynamics of organized activity that had as its aim the emancipation, liberation, and/or engagement of women as full participants in the political and social processes of the United States. Whether these women were sympathetic to these dynamics is perhaps a matter apart, for the question of sympathy versus antipathy toward women's political and social activism survives as an issue to the present day. But awareness in and of itself is noteworthy because knowledge of it may have the effect of adding texture to and/or helping to clarify more generally the shape and content of women's experience as the structure of modern American institutional educa
