One of those risks Allender points out is contempt, which is worse than hatred because it not only is ill-will towards another but also includes an element of judgment. Jesus said, "The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son" (John 5:22). To allow shame to lead to contempt instead of repentance is to push God aside and abrogate His prerogative of judgment. Thus, Jesus also warned, "Judge not, that ye be not judged" (Matt. 7:1).

Ironically, Allender needed to warn about contempt towards self as well as others: "or against the element of our being that is the cause of the shameful revelation" (27). A common new age teaching is to love oneself, often perverting Jesus' command to "love thy neighbor as thyself" by saying one must therefore love oneself before one can love others. Actually, no such idea is contained in the command; rather, the commandment, both in Leviticus 19:18 and Matthew 22:39, assumes all people already love themselves.
