French Sculptor Auguste Rodin

Rodin competed for his first monument when the City of Nancy in 1883 invited twelve artists to compete for a monument to Claude Lorrain. Rodin's design consisted of a bronze statue placed on a stone pedestal ornamented with a high-relief representing Apollo in his chariot drawn by two horses, and the whole was to be in harmony with the prevailing style of Louis XV in the capital of Lorraine. Rodin's work was accepted and took seven years to complete. It was unveiled in 1892, but it was not liked by the residents of Nancy.
