He had expressed admiration for Ferris and his profession, stating that he wanted to be a newspaperman himself, yet the idea that his mother was once married to Mr. Ferris irks him. He also sees Ferris as an outsider, and though Ferris has carefully nurtured the idea of himself as an outsider, as a sojourner, still he finds feelings stirred in himself by his exposure to the family, the children, he and Elizabeth could once have been but are not.
