The beginning passages recount information which has already been given in Genesis, such as the list of the sons of Jacob who entered Egypt, the death of Joseph, and so on. New material is introduced at the same time as the story goes beyond the Genesis account, especially in the death of the entire generation of Joseph and the multiplication of the people. The introduction can be seen therefore to point both backward to the earlier tradition and forward to the story of the Exodus. The source division for the first half is generally agreed to as follows: P = 1-5, 7; J= 6. P is generally assigned to 13 and 14 because of the characteristic style, vocabulary, and continuity with the introduction to Exodus and with the P source in Genesis. The division of the remainder of the chapters in the section has been more controversial, with sections assigned by different commentator
