he shore of the lake in the Fayum (Smith 11). Egypt developed in two sections, and the differences between Lower and Upper Egypt are considerable and pervasive. Upper Egypt was more liked with the rest of Africa, while Lower Egypt, actually the northernmost area of Egypt, is of a different origin. The people of Upper Egypt were originally nomads who belonged to the Hamitic population, and they may have consisted of older elements that were absorbed. The people of Lower Egypt, on the other hand, have radical links with Palestine and Syria rather than with the African groups (Woldering 27).

The pottery found in Neolithic settlements have geometric ornamentation which were incised and filled in with white paste. In Lower Egypt, burnished red clay vessels have a herring-bone pattern below the brim, and burnished black pottery has an ornamental strip along the brim consisting of rows of dots or lines. Finds in Upper Egypt from the Stone and Copper Age indicate a culture known as Badarian after the chief site of Badari. These products have been identified in Nubia as well. This culture was superseded by Nagada culture, named after Nagada in Upper Egypt (Woldering 30-31). Badarian culture was probably diffused over all of Africa, while Nagada culture was confined to Egypt (Woldering 33).
