Body and Mind and the New Epiphenomenalism

bell seems based in a pragmatic approach which flirts with the metaphysical. His honest approach leads him to a method of discussion by dissection. Campbell's intent is for his theory of the New Epiphenomenalism to be the cornerstone of his philosophical treatise, yet it seems to lose some of its power arriving as it does at the work's tail-end. Nevertheless the mastery of the material presented, the thoroughness of his research, and the integrity displayed by his willingness to confront the unresolved contradictions embedded

in the Mind-Body problem fashions allows Campbell to present himself as an expert on this topic worthy of respect and further consideration.

In Chapter One Campbell asserts that the Mind-Body problem actually surfaces as three separate concepts with which the philosopher must grapple. First, the Mind-Body problem must be identified and investigated. Second, the concept of Body must be philosophically circumscribed. Third, the concept of Mind must be successfully identified and categorized (2). Here is one of the first instances of Campbell's thoroughness. Campbell's philosophical stance is to trace out the details of the most elemental features of the Mind-Body problem. Body is to be understood in its physicality. The mind, however, immediately presents itself as a much more complex category. Campbell suggests first that the mind is what "distinguishes a man from a rock, tree, dummy, corpse" (3). At first, this may appear to be a facile definition. The inventory which he presents inclusive of "intention, decision, purpose, action, and want; pain and pleasure, emotion and mood" is beginning to suggest the complexity and diversity of the mind's essential aspects (3).
