One important source in Revelation is Ezekiel who provided many of the symbols that John describes in his initial view of the throne of God -- the view that constitutes the basics of the vision as it is presented at Moissac. Ezekiel was the prophet whose ministry marked the transition from pre-exile Israelite religion to post-exilic Judaism" -- he is the prophet of the times following the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple. As such Ezekiel is the prophet of a time of change, an appropriate voice for aiding in the explanation of the great change form the old to the new dispensation.

A second important source was the Book of Isaiah whose book of prophecies was well-known as one of the principal sources of the prophecies regarding the coming of Christ, the new Messiah.
