At the same time, the slide trumpet was developed. The slide at first was an extension of the mouthpiece within the trumpet's first length of tubing. The player would hold the body of the trumpet while sliding the entire instrument back and forth. This greater flexibility in handling allowed for a greater tonal range, especially in the lower register. The best known music for the slide trumpet was written by Johann Sebastian Bach.
