Gambling is ingrained in the culture of Las Vegas and students who desire to gamble are constantly bombarded with advertisements and reminders to do so. In addition, the gaming industry maintains a close relationship with the students and administrators at UNLV. Many students find employment in the casinos. Casino operators routinely participate in fundraising activities for the school and the community.

The spread of legalized gambling has led to the increased availability of gambling establishments and the problems associated with them. Industry experts project that, by the year 2000, 95 percent of the American population will live within a four-hour drive of major casino development (U.S. Congress, 1994, p. 1).
