Scholars consider II Maccabees to be less unified and stylistically advanced than I Maccabees. This book focuses on Judas Maccabeus as the ideal Jewish warrior who fervently prays before battle and piously observes the sabbath and other Jewish rituals. However, the bulk of material presented here derives from an earlier writer whom biblical scholars have identified as Jason of Cyrene. Both the original five volume treatise written by Jason of Cyrene and its condensed rendering in II Maccabees were originally written in Greek with the condensation believed to have been completed by 124 B.C.E.
