ducation and no desire for anything but their next meal or their next vile joke. And most of them sick all the time! The smell! What food one brings along can only last so long. And the food on the ship, if you can eat, is not Kosher and it is very bad--but how they pushed and shoved for it! (Howe 41).
Pushing and shoving is all there is everywhere on that ship and the arrival was such a relief that we were on our knees thanking God when we saw the Statue of Liberty. But Ellis Island is the worst of all. Thankful to be on land, you're so afraid that you might not get through
