School Counseling of Christian Fundamentalists

Despite the lack of agreement regarding whether Rogerian psychology is in or out of accord with scriptures, a psychological technique very much associated with Rogers is "mirroring," in which the counselor takes a very non-directive stance. Essentially, the counselor's dialog with the client when using the mirroring technique consists of merely restating and repeating the client's own remarks. The idea behind this is that if clients hear their own words repeated, they are better able to fully recognize what they are saying and thinking and so achieve deeper insight into their own psychodynamics.

This technique should work very well for school counselors working with Christian fundamentalist students because the therapeutic strategy allows for self-discovery at a rate and pace which the student selects. Moreover, the technique can operate to help the counselor not put his/her own values into the counseling situation because all the counselor is doing is merely repeating the student's own words.
