    Observation of Expressed Communication

    Introduction: "Communicative competence is the ability to communicate in a personally effective and socially appropriate manner." This involves two levels, one on the surface, the other deeper. The surface level is what is seen and heard--the expressed communication. The deeper level involves the preparation which leads up to the surface level.

    I spent time in a waiting room at my dentist's recently and observed the communication competence, or communication incompetence, of a number of other visitors who were with me in the waiting room.

    Body: The most interesting exchange in the waiting room involved a teenage girl and her mother. The teenage girl rarely took more than a second or two to respond to anything her mother said to her. In almost every instance, the communication of the daughter to her mother was loud, harsh, challenging, and confrontational.

    The mother, on the other hand, almost always took at least five or ten seconds to respond to her daughter. In almost every instance, the mother's communication was softly spoken, non-confrontational, even timid.

    The deeper level of the communication competence of both mother and daughter was apparent in the surface level of their communication.

    The daughter's preparation for her communication with her mother was obviously set and decided even before her mother said anything to her. The daughter was clearly intent on challenging, in one way or another, everything her mother said to her. She was like a dog waiting for the dog yummy to drop. All her preparation was finished and she was merely waiting for the next words to drop from her mother's mouth so she could pounce on them.

    For example, in one exchange, the mother suggested the daughter read a magazine. The daughter said, "I'll read a magazine if I feel like reading a magazine. I see the magazines. Do you think I'm blind?" The mother opened her purse and looked in it, but didn't take anything out, then clos...
