Natsume Soseki's novel Kokoro

y his entire life about betraying his friend, stealing and marrying the woman K loved, and for K's suicide. Sensei is supposed to be one of a dying kind of human being, who lives according to a strict moral code. However, when he betrayed his friend he broke the old moral code. What makes him a man with one foot in the old world, however, is that he always felt pain for what he had done. Also, he chooses to never tell his wife about what he did to his friend to win her. This also means that he is a part of the old moral world.

Still, there have been miseries and alienation in every nation and every era. The love triangle in this book is special because of the way it came about, and because of its aftermath, including K's suicide, Sensei's lifelong suffering in guilt, and then in Sensei's own suicide.
