4.St. Mark's, Venice (St. Mark's Cathedral of Venice, Late Byzantine, Begun 1063) and the Cathedral of St. Basil, Moscow (Cathedral of St. Basil, Late Byzantine, 1554-1560).
St. Mark's Cathedral is the largest and most lavishly decorated church of the Second Golden Age still surviving, and the church shows the Byzantine influence in the Greek-cross plan inscribed within a square. Each arm of the cross, though, has a dome of its own, with each dome encased in bulbous wooden helmets covered by gilt copper sheeting and topped by ornate lanterns so they seem taller and more conspicuous at a distance.
St. Basil in Moscow shows many Eastern influences in the domes and ornamentation. This Byzantine structure shows the sort of transformation that took place through the use of wood as a structural material, and the church seems very Russian with the many domes keyed to the imagination of simple peasant folk.
