he problem with discussing the Qumran community is that there is no certainty that the material recovered represents all the material that this community used. Nonetheless, it seems safe to make a number of statements about the use of canonical scripture, including new inclusions. There were a great number of those, since the sect seemed to combine Jewish scriptures with other belief systems and other stories.

For example, as Feldman (1992) noted, there is an important document called the Temple Scroll which contains information and instructions not included in the Pentateuch. This scroll includes a firstperson account from God which details how to build the temple, and was supposed to be part of God's original revelation to Moses. Feldman indicated that this scroll was probably part of sacred scripture for the Qumran community.

Feldman also indicated that the quotations from the Tanakh that are included in the Temple Scroll differ in some respects from the Masoretic text, along with the Septuagint and the Samaritan Pentateuch. In
