This is taken from Land's End, the tip of the peninsula of Cornwall in England, for which it is literally discriptive. (A peninsula in Spain, Finisterre, has exactly the same meaning, "land's end.") For a firm that originally started in 1963 as a business selling boat fittings and equipment the nautical name is appropriate enough, particularly with its connotation of the sea and adventure. But a telling detail is that the name is spelled wrong. The apostrophe is misplaced, "lands'" instead of "land's." An account on the "About Us' section of the Lands' End website explains this peculiarity. The infant firm's very first promotional material contained this error, according to this account.
