Women and the Koran

resent a chronology of the revelations to Muhammad. This organization was gradually accomplished during the course of the revelations and the course of the development of the revelations into the body of scripture currently identified as the Qur'an. This creation of the canon was completed by the immediate postMuhammad period, long before the modern era.

In his discussion of shari'ah, Doi (1984) described the Qur'an as organized into four different categories. In the first category, verses are designed to teach people through remembrance of the gifts of Allah. The second category includes verses which teach people through the remembrance of specific happenings. A third category provides verses teaching about death and eschatology. Finally, the fourth category includes verses which contain the commandments or injunctions of Allah for governing the conduct of all people, men and women. These are the verses which guide Muslim understanding of human rights and obligations.
