Given this, one can see that JohnÆs opening words are asserting not only that GodÆs Word (Jesus) existed in the beginning, but also that ôIn the organization [of cosmos] is Reason,ö that is, the world God has created is inherently rational and understandable. These five Greek words convey so much because they are not simple prose with only one meaning. They are poetry, beginning the hymn of praise that precedes the description of John the BaptistÆs ministry.
And now the discussion can turn back to Psalm 119, in which, it will be seen, the attitude of the Psalmist is much like that of John the Evangelist. The Psalmist too believes that GodÆs world is understandable. And the Psalmist believes further that the Torah is GodÆs gift to humanity that enables people to understand the world correctly, in the way that God intended, just as John believes that Jesus is the gift that enables human beings to understand the world correctly.
