An interesting study conducted by Lang and Frenzel (1988) examined the characteristics pedophiles exhibit to lure children. The authors noted that in their survey of a sample of sex offenders:
Pedophiles reported using a slow courtship or grooming process to seduce children with gifts, attention, and affection...Some subjects reverted to use of power, threats, and force in sexual abuse (Lang & Frenzel, 1988, p.303).
The authors also reported that among the personal characteristics reliably noted was the fact that pedophiles (as well as other sex offenders) demonstrated stereotypical thinking about sex with children, tailoring their perceptions to fit their erotic needs.
