With these institutionalized parliamentary majorities, the various national Communist parties have manipulated the power of government to repress political dissent. The moreorless peaceful political revolutions occurring in the socialist countries in 1989 represent a rejection of oneparty government, and particularly institutionalized oneparty rule to a much greater extent than they represent a rejection of communism per se, and, most certainly, to a greater extent than they represent a rejection of socialism, although, also most certainly, great dissatisfaction exists among the populations of these countries with both communism specifically and socialism generally.

The system which is being displaced in the socialist bloc in 1989 is the system of institutionalized oneparty rule. The one party in this case is the Communist Party; however, the 3probability is that similar dissatisfaction and resentment would be expressed against any political party which had institutionalized its power for more than 40 years.
