Expansion of the Genus Homo

dominance of the Neandertal, however, ended suddenly at some time between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago. Within a period as brief as 5,000 years, this variety of H. sapiens simply vanished. In its place appeared populations of anatomically modern humans.

Homo sapiens (modern) dispersed widely across the globe. Its migrations can be traced to changes in sea level. Periods of high sea level during the Upper Pleistocene could have increased pressure on existing food supplies. This would compel people to search for new land and may have motivated the migrations which occurred about 50,000 years ago to eastern Indonesia and Australia. Likewise, when sea levels later dropped H. sapien migrations occurred again. This time, the land bridges which formed between Siberia and the New World led to migrations into North America. The bridges enabled H. sapiens to begin establishing itself in the Americas some 12,000 years ago.
