d respondents if they thought that management style affected turnover ratios. As a consequence, a goodness of fit chi square analysis was used to evaluate the research hypothesis.

A sevenitem survey questionnaire was designed and employed in the conduct of this research. Each questionnaire item provided for only "yes" or "no" responses.

Survey instruments were distributed to automobile sales persons and sales managers in participating automobile dealerships. Completion of the instruments by the individuals to whom the questionnaire was distributed was voluntary.

Five automobile dealerships located in the Greater Phoenix area were selected and agreed to participate in this study. These dealerships were identified in Chapter 1 of this study. Random procedures were not employed in the selection of the participating dealerships.

Survey questionnaires were distributed to all sales persons and the sales managers in the participating dealerships. A total of 51 questionnaires were distributed. A total of 40 (78.4 percent) usable questionnaires were returned to the researcher. These 40 respondents constituted the research sample for this study. Random procedures were not employed in the selection of the research sample.

The seven items on the survey questionnaire employed in this study provided only for "yes" and "no" answers. The statistical significance of the responses to the questionnaire items was determined through the application of goodness of fit chi square analysis. Statistical significance was established at the p<.05 level of probability.

In a goodness of fit chi square analysis, the observed distributions for a specific variable or question are compared statistically to a theoretical distribution. In this study, there were only two possible responses to each of the seven survey questionnaire items. Therefore, the theoretical

distribution for each of the seven questions was 50 percent "yes" and 50...
