Public figure Betty Ford has come forward to share her experience of progression from prescription drugs, to daily alcohol use, through the painful family intervention, the miserable withdrawal from de-tox, and recovery which she publicly and privately shares with others at every opportunity (Ford 95). She cautions us that the holidays are a dangerous rough spot for those who drink, because alcohol has become a part of our tradition of celebration.

Rehabilitation programs struggle to cope with the problems associated with drinking and driving. A recent symposium in Australia was aimed at fine-tuning drunk driver detection (Sanson-Fisher, Redman, Homel, & Key 133), as if driving through four red lights were not indication enough. Police are now taught to look for the driver that is too cautious, as well as the ones that flagrantly violate the law.
