The Midlife Crisis

ever, face unique problems as they age, and studies have shown that it is more difficult for women to change or enter the workforce during middle age than it is for men (Gordon, Rozelle and Baxter, 1989). A clear patters does emerge, however, in that there is a direct correlation between job satisfaction and selfperception during middle age. This correlation effects the perceived "crisis" and further may prevent negative reaction if there is positive reinforcement within the career (Lance, et.al., 1989).

Contrary to popular wisdom about middle age, during the middle years adults often have a greater awareness of personal abilities coupled with a sense of wisdom and expertise about life and society. These skills seem to far outweigh any problems brought about by aging. In the cinema, for instance, older heroines have served to establish moral and ethical guidance for younger characters and point more to a sociological model which communicates that middle aged adults should be considered more as experienced role models for society (Walsh, 1989).
